Introduction to navigational skills for runners: 8 May 2022

This one day course covers the basics, with topics such as understanding different types and scales of map, interpreting map features, taking and following compass bearings, understanding contour lines, grid references and route choice, all while on the move!

If you have little or no experience or need a refresher with map and compass, this is the course for you.

The emphasis on this course is on learning the skills rather than running fast, so don’t worry about not being able to keep up.

The maximum number of people is 10 per course.

What to bring with you on the course

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers

  • Spare L/S base layer or similar

  • Hat or multifunctional headwear

  • Gloves

  • Food for the day/ lunch snacks

  • Race vest or pack to carry all of the above

  • Minimum of 500ml water/ fluid

  • Trail/ fell shoes
