So the Bob Graham record is finally broken... Spanish ultra runner, Kilian Jornet, broke it in a time of around 12 hours 52 mins.
That’s about an hour quicker than the previous record, which was set in 1982, by local legend Billy Bland, who completed it in 13 hours 53 mins.
To put this in perspective, this is a proper fell running challenge that tests one both physically and mentally.
It’s approximately 69 miles (route dependant), over 42 Lakeland mountains, including the highest in England, climbing in excess of 28000 feet (Mt Everest equivalent!)
To become a member of the Bob Graham Club, you have to run the route in under 24 hours.
It’s being going since 1932 when Bob himself did it and wasn’t repeated again until 1960.
They reckon that only 1 in 4 attempts succeed in under 24 hours due to fitness and/ or weather, among other things.
I did it back in 2005 and had an hour or so to spare in mixed weather... It is not easy, as many will agree!
To achieve it in under 13 hours is incredible and an indication of this man's incredible natural ability.
Well done Killian. Welcome to the club!
